Broadway Bound

(Ages 7-11)

Curriculum

Students choose 4 classes from the options below. Ballet and tap/jazz are required courses, leaving them the options of acting, musicianship, and pre-modern for their final two classes.

  • In this hour long class, students work on ballet class etiquette, musicality, flexibility, introduction to the ballet barre, and numerous foundational skills, including port de bras, plies, releve, tendus, degage, balance and waltz preparation, echappe, spring points, chasses, pushing through feet and toes in jumps, spotting, and center turns and jumps.

  • This hour long class is spent working on theatre jazz, including turns and jumps, choreography, and the numerous styles of jazz found in theatre. Our tap portion of class will introduce all foundational steps so we can build them as they progress through classes. With a strong focus on counting music and storytelling, students will get foundational training on what it means to dance for theatre.

  • Through games, scene studies, monologue coaching, improv, and emotion studies, our budding thespians will explore various ways to show expression and how to analyze a script to find the needed emotion.

  • This class teaches students the styles of all of the great contemporary dancers in a rotational format. They also do conditioning in this class, to focus on one part of the body at a time and how to properly stretch and strengthen those muscles for a strong and healthy body.

  • In this hour-long class, students will begin to build the fundamentals of musicianship through movement, singing of simple, fun songs, sight singing and aural learning games, and playing of simple instruments, like tambourines, drums, and bells. Throughout the course, students will build their aural and physical awareness of rhythm and melody, preparing them for later music learning as a singer or instrumentalist.

Assessments

Semester Evaluation

Teachers keep track of skill progressions and complete a semester evaluation for each student. This allows parents to see how students are progressing, our students to make personal goals, and our teachers to ensure they are addressing all skills and needs for the students in their classes.

Mid-Year Conferences

Optional conferences are available after the first semester for parents to meet with teachers about their child’s progress. Any questions or concerns can be addressed and continued focus on student goals can be discussed.

Placement Assessments

At the end of each semester, students do an informal placement assessment in each class. This allows for level adjustments, if needed, before the new semester. It also gives our teachers the opportunity to create a semester of curriculum that focuses on the needs of the students in a particular class.

Academy Perks

While any of our classes can be taken a la carte, being an academy student comes with many perks! Our students are “Rad” and we want to praise their hard work, create a culture of friendship and support, and cultivate a continued love of the arts! Check out some of the perks of being an academy student below!

Certificates/Awards

For our Theatre Foundations and Broadway Bound levels, the end of every ballet unit is met with a certification of completion for that level. This praises progress and allows us to give feedback to the kids, without them feeling discouraged for the progress that they have made.
